Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released later this week.
